Building in the woods – out where the wild things are . .

Welcome to Shiloh

Here we will be blogging about our first home that we are in the process of building. It is a log home built in the style of what is called “butt and pass” as taught by the Log Home Builders Association (LHBA).

This is the culmination of at least 10 years of planning and dreams for Rachel and I. While it began many years ago, it became very much a reality on August the 14th when we closed on our five acres of land in the pines of northwest Florida.

Join us on the journey.

Ha Keith, glad to see someone building the LHBA style in Florida. I think there are some others but I’ve never been able to follow their project. I’ve been looking at the site for a few years and would like to take the class but haven’t been to sure if I could use the southern pines down here. I live in north Florida so thats about all there is as far as I know that can be used. Are you using the southern pine and if so what about the sapp?
    Thanks, Joe

Glad you stopped by Joe. Sorry I don’t have a porch yet for you to sit on :)

For a short answer, yes, you can use pine. A number of the members are using pine in the southeast. I am not sure about the sap so I can’t answer that right now :) But, it’s been done .. and done well.

Keith, do you know if it matters what time of the year is best to fell the trees or if it even matters? If so which time is the best? I’ve been told that you can’t let them sit on the ground more than a couple days because of the bugs. Are you cutting your own?
    Thanks, Joe

Shiloh. Is that the name of your home? It’s perfect. One of my very favorite names.

Thanks becca. We are debating between “just” Shiloh and Shiloh Acres.

Joe, it is best to cut your trees in the winter as there is less sap to deal with..but its not stricly necessary. I have no plans of cutting my own as cutting down trees is one of the most dangerous things you can do . . . and that goes double for amateurs like me..

I am so proud of you and Rachel. Y’all have been helpmates to each other and you have been blessed beyond measure with your sweet children.

Thrilled that I’ll be able to follow the process. We had plans to do this after Ivan, but had to reroute our dream. We did buy another lot next door for the future (we still have our plans). We also live in the sticks and do not have access to public water. We love it in the woods and got rid of the camper because now it’s like camping everyday. BTW, love the pink gear, Rach!
