Multi-core Fun

If you follow my blog you know I harp (some might say constantly) on how I think that MySQL needs to evolve the server code to support an extreme (currently) number of core processors.  Along those lines, I ran across this article linked to from Slashdot.  Basically, it is the rundown of a roundtable discussion by some top chip people.  It was interesting to me how they took different approaches to the coming problems.

Very interesting debate on implementation and on how long today’s software model will last in its current form. The API model (instruction set architecture to compatibility based on an API) is a bit scary as software could easily throw a machine out on the street. But I agree that multi-core advances are certainly the “hail mary pass down the field” — it will be interesting to see who is there to catch it.
